diy lesson learned the hard way {primer before painting}

Because I begged and pleaded and told them about my secret crush on them, Kilz is my primer sponsor for our Key West conch home remodel.  I love them to pieces and am excited to share with you why.  I will never write a word about their products I don’t believe 100%.  You can find my full disclosure here. Confession time. I’ll go first. We bought our first house in 2001.  A cute, cute little brick ranch in Indianapolis, Indiana. That had been owned and lived in for over forty years by the same old couple … who were smokers. The house was literally stained with smoke.  There were squares on the wall where pictures had hung and the ceilings were more of an ashy grey than the white they had started out. It sounds so prehistoric now, but we hadn’t jumped on the digital camera bandwagon yet so we don’t have any digital photo evidence and I can’t even find our old photo albums to try to scan some pics for you.  (I can’t imagine why.)  But here’s the outside, hiding all of that smoke stain and stank inside. Cute, right?!?! Well, what is not cute is my personality after painting the same ceiling 5 times. Yep.  It was our first house, and we were young and ambitious and bought a little bit of a fixer upper, in the form of all-smoke-stained-surfaces-needed-help.

revamp your kitchen with home depot

I don’t think I’ve mentioned how much I love having access to such a great home improvement store only a few minutes away.  Since I’m averaging one trip to Home Depot per day, it’s a pretty good thing it’s so close.  :) I was just there yesterday talking with the associate in the appliance department about some of  their newer options … have you heard of the new slate color for appliances?  I might be in love with it. Here’s a great video that will show you why Home Depot is my go-to place for our Key West conch home renovation. Update: The video should be working now, sorry for the confusion.

house tour video {before}

Happy, happy Friday!! We have made some serious progress on the living and dining room this week.  Raise your hand if you love a little demolition.  Yeah, me too!! Remember the wall o’ mirrors?? Well, behind that was the omnipresent paneling, and then drywall and then what we’ve found under it all … painted Dade County Pine. And then we did this … Lucky for me, and maybe you (you’ll have to decide on that), I took a little walk through of the house before we really got started.  (I guess the part where I trip over the molding I had already taken down proves it wasn’t actually before I got started, but it was still day one.)  :)

my wooden spool dilemma

Hey, hey!  Happy Monday!  How are you? I am great! I am gearing up for company to come visit.  FUN!! That’s one thing about living on an island.  We get our fair share of visitors.  :) Luckily, we mostly like them all.  ;)  We had about a year there where we had at least one week of company every month.  I became quite the tour guide. Hence my knowledge of the top 10 free things to do in Curacao.  I’m ready to get to doing a few of those again soon. You know how it goes, don’t you?!?  You have these really cool things to do in your town, but you don’t usually do them unless you’re showing them to visitors. Or you have this really cool room in your house … or on the roof as it may be … and you don’t spend as much time up there as you could.  Because it’s always there.  I’ll just go up tomorrow.  Or next week.  Or sometime soon, for sure!  :)

blog room organization

So, last I left you in the living room and we were looking like this. And, I’ll give you one guess as to what it looks like today.  :) Yep, exactly the same with a little more dust. See, I have no issue leaving one room totally midstream to shift gears.  I probably should finish up in there, because the fab new striped rug really doesn’t go with those couches. I’m still in shock about that.  ;) But, once again, I’m going function over form. For now. I did make a little drop off at the laundromat this morning that I’m hoping will one day be my couch solution.  Let’s just say the sewing machine is coming out in September and I’m more than a wee bit skerd!  You know I’ll keep you posted. Now, do you want to see something that might make you skerd?

restoring {old wood} scrape, strip and sand

I have just finished my second old door project around here, and after my DIY day by the pool with my girlfriends I’ve started looking more constructively at how I work with old wood. It was fun to be with my friends, and showing them new things, and realizing that what seems second nature to me might be new to others.  So, here are some of my thoughts as I work with old wood.  Some are technical, some are personal preference, some are physical and some are mental tips.  Hopefully you find some, little bit of it useful.

month in minutes {july 2012}

Check this out … the monthly review in the first week of the following month.  #surprisedmyselfwithmyefficiency July has always been a favorite month of mine … and it proved to be the same on the blog. I started the month begging asking for help as I started to undertake a living room redo. So far, as part of the Blogging without Borders series we have made a floating shelf and started work on DIYing a coffee table.  I am reeeally hoping to have that for you at the next update. If this review is old news to you, head over to see what the other gals are up to. We had a bunch of fun with decor on this new floating shelf.  Well, I know I did, I hope you did, too.  :) From the initial attempt, an early fall mantel and the most recent where we finally brought ‘the girls‘ back and added a pop of color with a spray painted leaf wreath. How to Build a Floating Shelf Tutorial is here! I enjoyed putting together a round-up of 105 ideas for your 4th of July celebration.  What a great resource! I was a day late so feel free to pin it for next year.  :) And I also made another piece of pallet word art that I adore.  It has been the perfect, sun shiny addition to our rooftop pallet bed area. July was also great fun for me as part of the Hometalk Ambassador team.  I shared my tips for posting your projects on Hometalk here.  And also had a blast with my girlfriends at our DIY pool party with Hometalk ‘swag’ here.  Thank you so much Hometalk, and Miriam, for the wonderful opportunity.  :)  It gave me chance to help my friend Carol learn how to use … continue reading

room inspiration {living room ideas}

Calling all readers!  I NEED help!  Like, serious help.  Like, I almost backed out of doing this little series because I am shakin’ in my flip flops.  (Take a second to picture that … it’s funny.) What series, you say? Blogging without Borders we’re calling it, and along with 13 of some of my favorite blogs we have committed to stretching our DIY limits and working on projects we’ve never tried before.  And I am more than a teensy bit nervous about said commitment. I am not going to scare you all off with a ton of before pictures, instead, I’m going to scare you off with show you my plan.  ;)
